Living in the Place of Your Imagination

Sometimes I wonder whether I would have been a writer if I had not returned to India after my student days in Canada. This was the early seventies and just about everybody who could escape to the West ended up applying for immigration as a step towards permanent residence.

Not that I became a writer immediately. Many years had to pass before that happened. In leaving Canada and coming back to Delhi, I was returning to the familiar. I taught English Literature at the same college in Delhi University where I had studied, I married the brother of a childhood friend, and moved back to the street where I had once lived with my parents. ‘In my beginning is my end’ seemed an appropriate tag for the trajectory of my life.
